Instructions for a fast little project for one yard of medium to lightweight canvas. One yard, six little fabric boxes.
Supplies.
- 1 yard (45 inches wide) mid weight canvas or similar woven
- 48 random or mismatched buttons
- 1 hank of cotton floss
Instructions.
Cut twelve (12) 11x11 squares. You should have enough yardage to cut off selvage and still get twelve 11 inch squares.
Take one square and fold diagonally.
Cut off each corner, as shown, measuring 3 inches from the points. Do this for all 12 squares.
Unfold and it should look like this;
Fold diagonally again, in the opposite direction.
Cut off corners, as shown, measuring 3 inches from the points.
Do this for all 12 squares.
Take two (2) pieces and place them right side together.
Pin as shown, start sewing at the bottom pin, going all the way around and stopping at the top pin.
Sew, using a 1/4 inch seam allowance.
Trim off outside corners and snip inside corners.
Turn right side out and use a point to push out corners.
Get out the iron and press.
Top stitch using an 1/8 inch seam allowance.
Mark each tab for buttons. Two (2) buttons per tab for a total of 8 buttons per box. Mark 3/4 inch from the corner; 3/4 inch in, 3/4 inch down.
If you have a button sewing attachment to your machine, I would get friendly with it. Attach all buttons.
Cut four (4) pieces of floss, nine (9) inches long.
Tie one piece of floss to just one button on each tab. Pick left or right button for each tab and keep it the same as you go around.
Snip off excess thread from knot.
Pull of two sides and wrap buttons, manilla envelope fashion, to form sides, repeat for all corners.
Finished!
Now repeat instructions 5 more times for a perfect little six-pack set.
